Description
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR (RELIEF)
MANHATTAN AND WELLINGTON GROUP HOMES
INTERNAL/EXTERNAL
RELIEF (CASUAL ROLE)
If you’re looking to make a difference, make it with McMan … be the difference that changes everything!
At McMan Calgary & Area, connection is at our core. Every year, we make a meaningful difference in the lives of more than 5,000 children, youth, adults, and families by providing programs and services that support those with complex needs – including mental health challenges, addictions, homelessness, poverty, and disabilities. We believe in everyone’s deep and infinite worth, and no matter who you are, we will walk alongside you.
Through our work, we rebuild, integrate, and strengthen connections – to self, peers, families, communities, support professionals, and the land – because people need people. Our sense of well-being, identity, and belonging comes from relationships, and healing happens through these connections. Professional supports are there for a season or a reason – not a lifetime – because our goal is to empower individuals and families to thrive independently.
We are currently looking for a Youth Development Coordinator (Relief) for our Wellington and Manhattan Place group homes. Wellington is a new initiative that provides a safe and stable living environment with individualized support and around the clock care for sibling groups. This program will also have a strong cultural component, with a focus on strengthening relationships and supporting Indigenous young people and their families toward reunification. Manhattan Place is a community-based group home for complex youth who are referred through Children’s Services. This home provides a safe and stable living environment with individualized support and around the clock care for youth aged 12-17 years. Manhattan Place works closely with youth to strengthen relationships with their families and friends and foster connections in the community.
The Youth Development Coordinator will take on a caregiving role within the group home by providing a caring and nurturing home environment that is committed to ensuring daily needs are met in a safe and supportive way. The Youth Development Coordinator will practice from a trauma-informed framework to embed a youth development approach that is both strength and relationship based. The incumbent is expected to model a collaborative, cooperative approach focused on the personal, social, cultural and educational development of youth.
Through the provision of day-to-day care, providing case management, setting goals with youth, liaising with caseworkers, working with natural supports, and preparing youth for transition, the Youth Development Coordinator will teach life skills, and help youth establish normal routines while promoting their overall well-being. McMan is seeking a candidate who builds strong relationships, cares deeply about people, and is willing to learn alongside youth, families, and communities.
Hours of Work: Shifts will vary and include days, evenings, nights or weekends, as there are no preset scheduled hours. Relief staff are expected to adhere to McMan’s Shift Expectations Policy and must have the availability to accept a minimum of 2 shifts per month.
Some key aspects of this role:
- Upholding a duty of care that prioritizes trauma-informed principles to address the complex needs of children and youth who have experienced significant trauma.
- Recognizing and responding to trauma-related behaviours with sensitivity and understanding, emphasizing safety, cultural connectedness, and relationship development.
- Assisting youth to develop life skills, social skills and/or access to community resources.
- Organizing and coordinating general aspects of youth day-to-day needs (e.g., supporting youth with daily needs including getting ready for school, setting up appointments, attending monthly meetings with caseworkers, general household duties such as meal preparation, laundry, and cleaning, etc.).
- Teaching and supporting individuals with activities such as hygiene, basic cooking, money management, shopping, and safety skills.
- Facilitating physical, recreational, educational, social, cultural, and vocational activities.
- Accompanying and/or transporting youth to activities such as appointments, shopping, school, employment or leisure activities, or as required.
- Supporting youth development through role modeling and teaching new skills.
- Supporting youth in navigating relationships with natural supports.
- Providing stabilization through predictable structures, clear expectations and positive behaviour support.
The ideal candidate:
- Diploma or Degree in Human Services
- Relevant experience that may come from many places including youth work, family roles, community leadership, cultural involvement and learning, or lived experience
- Someone who builds strong relationships, cares deeply about people, and is willing to learn alongside youth, families, and communities
- Knowledge of Indigenous people’s unique histories, languages, cultural practices, spiritual beliefs, and knowledge systems – direct experience working with Indigenous youth, families, and communities is strongly preferred
- Knowledge of the Natural Supports and Trauma Informed Practice Frameworks
- Proven skills in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, critical thinking and problem solving, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A good understanding of how trauma, grief and loss can impact identity and connection with natural supports
